Still Life Oil Paintings

To find still life subjects, I sort through eggplants at the market, buy scratch-made cakes from bakeries, and pour locally crafted beer into pint glasses—anything to capture your attention and help you pause from our media-frenzied lives to witness the beauty that exists in the simplest of pleasures. I arrange the painting subjects in my studio and occasionally outside to get the desired light, and use a shadow box with a direct light source to create a chiaroscuro effect. I work from photographs of the food items that rot or lose their foam and fizz (for obvious reasons) and to capture every tiny nuance that makes each subject remarkable. Translating the wonder of life into something beautiful just for the sake of it is one of my favorite traits of being human.
